The Ever Changing Seasons of Life

If you have been listening to the Wisdom-Trek podcast over the past couple of weeks, you know that Paula and I have made the decision to sell our home in Charlotte and move back full time to The Big House in Marietta, Ohio. This was a significant decision for us since we enjoyed our home there and had many friends and an established routine there.

After analyzing the strong housing market in the Charlotte area and measuring that against some of our life goals from a financial perspective, we felt that it was a prudent time to make the move now. Also, since we were traveling between the two locations frequently for client work and other responsibilities, it was difficult at times to maximize our time at either location.

The details came together much faster than we anticipated, and in less than two weeks of making the final decision, we have moved and will be permanently residing at The Big House, God willing for the remainder of our natural lives. This is yet another example of the ever-changing seasons of life.

The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 3:1, “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” We are excited about moving back at the beginning of the fall season. While we enjoy all seasons, fall holds a special meaning for us, in that it was when we first met and started dating. We love the trees changing colors, and the crisp fall air. For me growing up, it was the busiest time of year, because it was apple picking time, which was a lot of hard work, but one where we spent most days outside.

This year I will be able to continually look out the large windows of our newly renovated office and watch the leaves on the large maple and oak trees change from green to bright yellow, orange and red before finally falling off.  It is then “the leaf harvest” will commence.

So as one season of life is ending and we morph into a new one I am reminded of what Dr. Suess once said, “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

How about you? Are you welcoming the ever changing seasons of life with open arms?  Yes, fall will eventually turn to the cold of winter with its ice and snow, but instead of dreading it, enjoy its beauty.

Embrace whatever season of life you are currently in today, enjoy it, and always be preparing for your next season.  For as surely and night follows day, the seasons of life will continue on throughout your life. If you prepare properly, every season can be enjoyable.

A Time for Everything

The Time for What Is Most Important

It seems that all of our lives are filled with busyness where we have many more activities than we have time. We rush from one activity to the next, barely having time for the most important activities of life.

Busyness isn’t a virtue, nor is it something to respect. Though we all have seasons of crazy schedules, very few of us have a legitimate need to be busy ALL the time. We simply don’t know how to live within our means, prioritize properly, and say no when we should.

Being busy rarely equates to productivity these days. Just take a quick look at your schedule. Your busyness probably overshadows your productivity by a wide margin.  You are rushing all over the place, and running late much of the time. You’re heading to work, conferences, meetings, social engagements, and sports events. You barely have enough free time for family get-togethers, and you rarely get enough sleep.  Yet, emails are shooting out of your smartphone like machine gun bullets, and your day planner is jammed to the brim with obligations. Your busy schedule gives you an elevated sense of importance. But it’s all an illusion. You are like a hamster running on a wheel, getting nowhere fast.

Though being busy can make you feel more alive than anything else for a moment, the sensation is not sustainable long term. You will inevitably, whether tomorrow or on your deathbed, come to wish that you that you spent less time on the buzz of busyness and more time actually living a purposeful life.

King Solomon taught us in the book of Ecclesiastes that there is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.  I know I fall prey to these same situations and am trying to learn. Let us all make a commitment to live life in the season that we are in now, and take the time for what is most important.

The Constant, Predictable, Pattern of Change

Pattern of Change

The tide comes in and then recedes; the sun rises, giving light, and then sets, bringing darkness. Drought plagues the farm fields of the world, followed by rain in abundance.

On this day, we swelter under the intense heat of the July sun, and soon we clothe ourselves against the penetrating cold of the mid-winter storm. Prosperity brings her abundant opportunity and rewards, but will withdraw at a future time when confronted by a receding business climate.

The smile gives way to the tear, as does the joy to the sorrow and the jubilation to the tragedy. Close friends become hated enemies. The guns and bloodshed of war are followed by the stillness of a temporary peace.

Our life is made up of seasons we need to be prepared for each season as it arrives. Let Wisdom-Trek be your guide to navigate through each season.
