Serious Faith

Doubt and faith are opposed to each other. The greater your doubt, the less is your faith. The converse is also true, as your faith grows more substantial and more durable, the doubts and fears in your life will begin to decrease. All of us face a certain amount of fears, worries, and concerns, but to what extent do they influence and control your life? We cannot fool ourselves if we say we have strong faith but live fearfully; then we are deceitful by the very words we speak. Others can see your life and know if your faith is real and is controlling your life. So let’s take our faith seriously and practice it through minimizing the doubts and fears in our lives. Let us live a life of bold confidence in the One who has created us and is the champion of our faith.  Hebrews 12:1-3 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up.That’s a wrap for today’s Wisdom Unplugged quote. A Quiet Place of Rest – Meditation Monday

This is Day 1404 of our Trek, and it is time for Meditation Monday. Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy. For you, it may just be time alone for quiet reflection. You may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life, Meditation includes reading and reflecting on God’s Word and in prayer. It is a time to renew my mind, refocus on what is most important, and making sure that I am nurturing my soul, mind, and body. As you come along with me on our trek each Meditation Monday, it is my hope and prayer that you, too, will experience a time for reflection and renewing of your mind.

 I don’t know about you, but with the issues surrounding Covid-19 and now so much civil unrest, there are days where I just feel exhausted. This is a bit odd for Paula and me since our schedules and routines have not really changed all that much.  We do work with some companies that have been impacted significantly, so that may be part of it. I also attribute some of this exhaustion to the cares we have for family members, friends, and business associates who have been impacted. Plus, none of us like the unknown, and in the past three months, there have been more unknowns that face each of us personally. In addition to that, the entire world has been impacted. So it is not surprising that all of us are more prone to being exhausted. We all need some time to reflect and recharge. Today let us meditate on:

A Quiet Place of Rest

How do you restore your energies after you have reached the exhaustion point? What do you do when the fatigue debt has mounted so high in every dimension of your life — physical, emotional, and spiritual — that you do not think you can do one more thing?  Where do you go for renewal when plenty of sleep doesn’t relieve the bone-weariness that pulses through every fiber of your being?

These are not hypothetical questions. You probably know that from personal experience. There is a kind of tiredness that nothing seems to relieve. This kind of exhaustion comes at the end of a long spiritual battle or from being the long-term caregiver for a loved one. Maybe it stems from ministering to people repeatedly until you are completely depleted. Possibly you are battling a long and debilitating illness or from a myriad of other issues.For many of us who have found ourselves in such wearisome conditions, retreat and rest are often prescribed. They are also much desired. Yet many find such restful retreats remedy their weariness for just a short time, only to learn its return has left them feeling entirely and perpetually “burned out.”

Elijah’s example of rest and refreshment after his exhaustion is a good one. Food and rest were not enough for Elijah to be renewed (1 Kings 19:1-7), although they were part of his healing. What Elijah needed most, however, was to be in the presence of God. He needed to have God minister to him and speak directly to his heart (1 Kings 19:8-18). God spoke to Elijah in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19:12) and called Elijah back into service, reminding him there were others out there still serving the LORD God (1 Kings 19:18). One of these, in particular, needed Elijah to prepare him to lead God’s people (1 Kings 19:15-17). This was Elisha, who would eventually replace Elijah when God called him home.

It is a precious scene where Jesus called his apostles to a quiet place of rest after a season of ministry in Mark 6:30-32. The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told him all they had done and taught.  Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat.  So they left by boat for a quiet place, where they could be alone.I am not surprised that when Jesus saw the weariness of his apostles, the Lord not only told them to go away to a quiet place, but he also called them to be with him. Getting away wasn’t enough. Resting and being alone, far away from the crowd, wouldn’t rekindle the holy fire they needed to minister. No matter how restful retreat from the maddening rush may seem at the time, getting away by itself will not restore what is spent. Only the presence of the Lord can renew, restore, revitalize, reinvigorate, and re-establish our spirits. Only the Spirit of God, the breath of heaven, can make dry bones rise again (Ezekiel 37:1-13).

You may find that your concern for people you love has left you exhausted and depleted. There is always still plenty of things to do. If Jesus Christ saw the need for the apostles to find a place of quiet rest and be renewed by Him, don’t you think He desires the same for you?

So, as you face the challenges of your life, please, carve out some sacred space. Carve out some holy time to withdraw from the maddening rush and pressures that have plagued us these past few months. It doesn’t have to be for an extended period, but at least a brief respite. Be careful, though. Don’t just withdraw; you must also draw close to the only one who can restore your soul!

This is Day 1403 of our trek, and it is time for our Philosophy Friday series. Each Friday, we will ponder some of the fundamental truths and mysteries of life and how they can impact us in creating our living legacy.

As we continue on this trek called life, sometimes we have questions about life, so our Friday trek is a time when we can “Ask Gramps.” Gramps will answer questions that you would like to ask your dad or granddad, but for whatever reason, you are unable to. No matter how old we are, I know that all of us would like the opportunity to ask dad or gramps questions about life in many areas.

Earlier last month, we addressed a question that is too broad to answer in one episode. “Hey, Gramps, I realize that after this whole Covid-19 pandemic is under control, life will take on some sort of normalcy for most people. I can’t get my mind around how life will change with so many people out of work and many businesses not being able to survive. What is your take on how life will be after Covid-19?”

Life After Covid-19 Part 4

Our analysis so far has been overall jobs in manufacturing, brick-and-mortar retail, and the restaurant industry/future dining. As I mentioned in the past three weeks, I do not have a crystal ball nor a prophetic message about life after Covid-19. That being said, I do have over 40 years of business and nearly 64 years of life experience, which help me to see what others may not.

The core of the content today and in subsequent weeks comes from a book and companion blog written by Peter Diamandis. His book The Future Is Faster Than You Think was published in January of this year before Covid-19. Peter has recently also stated that Covid-19 would accelerate his predictions significantly. I recommend his book.

Let me once again offer some perspective. It has been said that crises don’t so much alter the course of history as accelerate changes that are already underway. Exponential technology has been disrupting traditional industries at an ever-increasing pace. The pandemic has put these changes into hyperspeed. Never have we had the opportunity to rewrite entire sectors, redefine the problems they address, and reinvent their solutions. This is a scary and also exciting time to be alive! Any time we have a disaster such as this, there is also unlimited opportunity.

The next economic sector we will explore is commercial real estate & offices.

Impact: The commercial real estate market is about to take a severe hit. And the real estate domino effect can topple adjacent financial institutions as well.

As thousands of companies race to digitize, offices are rapidly migrating to digital platforms and dematerializing entire divisions and corporate campuses.

The top-performing “Executive Team Coach” Keith Ferrazzi prophetically remarked a few weeks ago, “We’re not ‘going back to work’…We ARE at work, and for many, it’s more efficient and cost-effective than ever before.”

The convergence of 5G, WiFi-Gen6, video conferencing services (Zoom, Microsoft, and Cisco) and new collaboration tools such as Slack, are making our workforce more productive at home, freeing up an hour (or more) of commute time.

Entrepreneurial Opportunities: Here are some ideas to consider.

(1) Go Digital/Virtual: If you are a traditional company with a few hundred employees who clock in every day and work from a desk, maybe it’s time to consider dematerializing your office.

Consider the economic trade-off…What does your office space cost you? What would happen if you canceled your lease, pumped 80% of those savings into profit, and took the remaining 20% to give to your employees as a stipend for better bandwidth in their home? Or a more comfortable desk chair?

Or, if you really want to peek into the future, consider following the lead of Glenn Sanford, CEO of eXp Realty, the first-ever cloud-based real estate brokerage firm. Glenn utilized a virtual platform called VirBELA (which he now owns) to build out the company’s mega-campus in VR.

eXp Realty demonstrates the power of a dematerialized workspace, throwing out hefty overhead costs and fundamentally redefining what “real estate” really means. Ten years later, eXp Realty has an army of 14,000 agents across all 50 U.S. states, 3 Canadian provinces, and 400 MLS market areas…all without a single physical office.

(2) Live-Work Space: If you’re an owner of commercial real estate, get ready for a rocky future. What do you do as renters cancel on you? What happens when the prices plummet?

One idea you might consider is turning offices into a combination of Live-Work space (if zoning allows), whereby you can offer startups the opportunity for their employees to live and work in joint environments. Imagine comfortable one- and two-bedroom apartments in combination with open offices, conference rooms, a central kitchen, dining area, and a shared social lounge?

Now is the time to act if you are in the commercial real estate market or industry. It will radically change and consolidate during the next ten years. There are no guarantees, but we must be wise and make decisions based on the wisdom we have obtained.

James 4:13-16

Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.  What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.” Otherwise, you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.

We are still just scratching the surface of some of the accelerated changes that we will see in the next few years. Next Friday, we will explore more areas of transformation that is to come, specifically in education.

My Daughter, The Doctor

On the way to taking her daughter Suzy to preschool one morning, Kathy, the head of gynecology at Memorial Hospital, had left her stethoscope on the rear car seat right beside little Suzy. After looking at the stethoscope for several moments, Suzy could not contain herself any longer and picked it up and began playing with it.

As Kathy watched her through the rearview mirror, she began to wonder if her little Suzy would one day be a doctor like her. Kathy could hardly contain herself as her thoughts ran wild. Quietly, she said to herself, be still, my heart, my daughter wants to follow in my footsteps and be a doctor!

Little Suzy put the small end into her ears and then looked at the round end curiously and spoke loudly into the instrument, “Welcome to McDonald’s. May I take your order?”

I hope that brought a smile to your face today. If it did, pass your smile on to someone else; we all could use a kind smile each day. Our Thursday thought is, “My doctor asked me if I had ever had a stress test? YES, I replied, It’s called LIFE!”

Mastering the Bible – Israel Today and the Temple of God – Worldview Wednesday

Today is Day 1401 of our Trek, and it is Worldview Wednesday. Creating a Biblical Worldview is essential to have a proper perspective on today’s current events. To establish a Biblical Worldview, you must have a proper understanding of God and His Word. Our focus for the next several months on Worldview Wednesday is Mastering the Bible, through a series of brief insights. These insights are extracted from a book of the same title from one of today’s most prominent Hebrew Scholars, Dr. Micheal S. Heiser. This book is a collection of insights designed to help you understand the Bible better. When we let the Bible be what it is, we can understand it as the original readers did, and as its writers intended. Each week we will explore two insights.

Mastering The Bible – Israel Today and the Temple of God

Insight Sixty-Nine: In the New Testament “Israel” Doesn’t Always Refer to the Nation or Its People

Earlier, we saw that use of the term “Israel” varied in the Old Testament. Sometimes “Israel” referred to all twelve tribes, and other times it referred to the northern kingdom of ten tribes following the fracturing of the kingdom. The variation in meaning, then, was due to politics and geography.

The New Testament also uses “Israel” in a variety of ways. Sometimes it refers to the Promised Land, the twelve tribes, or ethnic Jews. But this time, the reason is driven by theology.

The birth of the early church in the book of Acts shows us plainly that God’s people were never intended to be identified with ethnic Israel forever. Gentiles were destined for inclusion in the people of God, as was told to Abraham in Genesis 12:3. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you.  Because of what Jesus did on the cross, the gentiles were included in Israel. The New Testament refers to this blending as a “mystery” in Ephesians 3:3-9. Paul makes this theology explicit in his letter to the Galatians. He begins with the original promise given to Abraham, father of Israel, as he expands this thought in Galatians 3:7-9. The real children of Abraham, then, are those who put their faith in God.  What’s more, the Scriptures looked forward to this time when God would make the Gentiles right in his sight because of their faith. God proclaimed this good news to Abraham long ago when he said, “All nations will be blessed through you.” So all who put their faith in Christ share the same blessing Abraham received because of his faith.

Paul moves from this opening to a discussion of the law. He denies the law’s saving power and instead holds up faith in Christ. Israel’s Messiah, as the way of salvation. Then he closes his argument with language that would startle both the Jewish and gentile unbeliever in Galatians 3:25-29:

And now that the way of faith has come, we no longer need the law as our guardian. For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus. And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes. There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.

Paul couldn’t be more explicit: if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise. There is one people of God.

 Insight Seventy: The People of God Are the Temple of God

Presuming they had access to the Scriptures, the Bible of the earliest Christians was the Old Testament. We have the Old Testament today, of course, but we look at it much differently than early Christians did. One reason is that we live at a time far removed from the days of Jesus, whom the early church expected would soon return. Another is that we live on the other side of the catastrophic events of AD 70, the year the Romans destroyed the Jewish temple.

One of the ways this time differential plays out is the way Christians look at Ezekiel 40-48, the fantastic prophecy of a future temple. Since the prophecy appears in the book of Ezekiel, it was written at the time (or shortly after that) Israel’s first temple, the temple of Solomon, was destroyed in 586 BC. When the Jews returned from exile, they rebuilt the temple. That second temple (with some updating by Herod) was the temple known to Jesus and the apostles. This second temple was the one destroyed in AD 70.

Many Christians today look at Ezekiel 40-48 and believe it prophesies another literal temple that will be rebuilt just before Jesus returns. No New Testament author, however, saw the prophecy that way. There are no direct quotations of Ezekiel’s prophecy in the New Testament. That isn’t surprising since the temple was still standing in the days of the New Testament writers, at least up until AD 70. But even after that date, there are no direct quotations. In Revelation, a book that most would date well into the 90s, there are allusions to an idealized temple in Revelation 21, but nothing directly deriving from Ezekiel 40-48. There’s a reason for this seemingly odd omission. In New Testament theology, believers are the temple of God. They have replaced the temple. Believers indwelt by the Spirit are now the place sanctified by the sacrificial blood of Jesus, where God’s presence dwells. This temple was made at the resurrection and not by human hands in Mark 14:58 when Christ was on trial, the priest said. “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this Temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another, made without human hands.’”

Paul is explicit in this regard. In 1 Corinthians 3:16, he writes, Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in you? Here Paul speaks to the Corinthians collectively. But in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, he applies this same thinking to individual believers: Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself,  for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.  Paul repeatedly emphasized that believers are the place where the presence of God dwells (cf. Romans 8:9-11; Ephesians 2:22; 2 Timothy 1:4).

For early believers, there was no need to worship at the temple—they were the temple. This was significant for a people of God that consisted of both Jews and gentiles. Had a temple been essential, gentiles would have been prohibited from worshipping God by the Jews who didn’t follow Jesus. The indwelling of the Spirit removed that obstacle.
