Five Spiritual Disciplines – Meditation Monday
Wisdom – the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek! Where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1419 of our Trek, and it is time for Meditation Monday. Taking time to relax, refocus, and reprioritize our lives is crucial in order to create a living legacy. For you, it may just be time alone for quiet reflection. You may utilize structured meditation practices. In my life, Meditation includes reading and reflecting on God’s Word and in prayer. It is a time to renew my mind, refocus on what is most important, and making sure that I am nurturing my soul, mind, and body. As you come along with me on our trek each Meditation Monday, it is my hope and prayer that you, too, will experience a time for reflection and renewing of your mind.
Although the Covid-19 pandemic continues to be on our minds, and discussed daily on the major news programs, I think for most of us, we are moving onto a new season of life. We are all trying to determine what our new normal may be for the remainder of this year, at least. Recently in my morning devotional time, I came across five spiritual disciplines that we all should put in our lives and make them a habit. Today let us meditate on:
Five Spiritual Disciplines
Let us start today to practice these five spiritual habits that will change the way we live. Let us make God the one thing we pursue above anything else. As a new season begins, here are five spiritual disciplines you can practice to make time with God a daily habit.
- Give thanks – Psalms 75:1
We thank you, O God!
We give thanks because you are near.
People everywhere tell of your wonderful deeds.
Have you experienced healing? Answered prayers? Breakthrough in the life of someone you love? Salvation? As you seek God’s heart for this new season, take a moment to thank Him for what He’s already done.
- Spend 5 minutes in silence – John 15:4
Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.
Abiding in Jesus starts with stillness. Pause, take a deep breath, and give anything concerning you over to God. Spend 5 minutes centering your heart on the One who matters most.
- Remember Whose you are – 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.
God loves you. (Let that sink in.) The price He paid for you cost Him everything. Remind yourself of Whose you are, and then confidently dream big with God for this new season.
- Meditate on God’s Word – Psalms 119:97
Oh, how I love your instructions! I think about them all day long.
How does Jesus want you to live? One of the best ways to find out is to spend time in Scripture. As you do, ask God to speak to you through His Words about what your next right step should be.
- Focus on what is excellent – Philippians 4:8
And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
You have been given the mind of Christ. If you’re not sure of what you should do in your next season, try asking yourself: What is praiseworthy? What decisions would honor God?
Make a list of whatever comes to mind, and intentionally pursue those things.
For, “Who can know the Lord’s thoughts?
Who knows enough to teach him?”
But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.
By Infusing these five spiritual disciplines into your life every day, you can actively create keystone habits: acquired patterns of behavior that form the basis of your daily routines. Imagine what good, personal habits, you might be cultivating a year from now because you purposefully chose to pursue intimacy with God today!
