You Can’t Take It With You – Humor Unplugged
Wisdom – the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek! Where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your Captain on our journey to increase Wisdom and Create a Living Legacy. Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is Day 1437 of our Trek, and time for a 3-minute mini-trek called Humor Unplugged. Our Thursday podcast will provide a short and clean funny story to help you lighten up and live a rich and satisfying life. Something to cheer you and give a bit a levity in your life. We are told in Proverbs 15:30 A cheerful look brings joy to the heart; good news makes for good health. We are also encouraged in Proverbs 17:22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength. Consider this your vitamin supplement of cheer for today. So let’s jump right in with today’s funny which is titled:
You Can’t Take It With You
Old snarling Sam, was a grumpy miserly man, had no friends. He did live a long life and was quite successful financially. Sam was known for rarely spending his wealth, and since he did not trust banks, he kept most of it in his home. After Sam turned 90, his health rapidly turned for the worst. Just before he died, he asked Dave his doctor, Lew his lawyer, and Mike, his minister, to gather around his bedside.
Through a frail voice, Sam said, “I have always heard you can’t take it with you, but I am going to prove you can, I have $300,000 in cash under my mattress. It’s in three envelopes of $100,000 each. I want each of you to take one envelope now, and just before they throw the dirt on me, you throw the envelopes in.”
A week later, Sam died, and his funeral soon followed. Dave, Lew, and Mike attended the funeral promised, and each threw his envelope into the grave.
On the way back from the cemetery, the Mike, the minister said, “I don’t feel exactly right. I’m going to confess. I needed $50,000 badly for a new church we’re building, so I took out $50,000 and threw only $50,000 in the grave.”
Dave, the doctor, hung his head in shame and said, “I, too, must confess. I am building a hospital and took $75,000 and threw in only $25,000.”
Lew, the lawyer, said in a proud tone, “Gentlemen, I’m surprised, shocked, and ashamed of you. I don’t see how you could hold out that money. I deposited the $100,000 into my personal bank account threw in my personal check for the full amount.”
I hope that brought a smile to your face today. If it did pass your smile onto some else, we all could use a kind smile each day. Our Thursday thought is, “A miser grows rich by seeming poor; an extravagant man grows poor by seeming rich.
Here is our verse for today:
And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?

Complete and sufficient grace can only come from God. This does not mean that humankind is incapable of at least a measure of grace to all others. Since God created us to be bearers of His image, we can show and extend grace, even to those who may not deserve it, and to those who do not show mercy to us. God shows us grace because of His love for us, not because of our love for Him. It is because God loves us so much that He stooped down to earth and became a human so that we could be rescued through the sacrifice of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection. As God’s image-bearers, we must show our love to others even when they are unlovely. This love can be shown by stooping down to tangibly rescues others that are in need. We are all created by God, and none of us should ever think we are better than others. We need to understand it is only by God’s grace that we can live in such a manner that we can help others.

How do you approach life? With positive expectancy, or fear? God uniquely created us to be bearers of His image. To show forth to a world that is seeking, what God is truly like. It is more than just reflecting His image, it is allowing His image to shine through us. That is what being an image-bearer means. Because of this we can and must grasp the truth that God is going to be at work in every situation as we release our faith in Him. Did you catch that last phrase? Grasp God’s truth by releasing our faith to the only One who can give us a life full of expectancy and hope. A rich and satisfying life. We can live such a life each day as we trust in God. This can be summed up in a few sentences that the Apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Ephesians. Ephesians 3:14-21 When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.

Dr. Heiser shares that during his teaching career is that one of the biggest misconceptions he has encountered about Bible interpretation is the idea that interpreting what the Bible says with symbols or metaphors equates to concluding that what you’re reading isn’t real. This is deeply flawed thinking. But it’s nevertheless understandable.
Just as nonliteral doesn’t mean “not real,” biblical symbols aren’t invitations to interpret Scripture however you want. Symbols not only have true meanings, but their meanings can be incredibly powerful. The meanings of biblical symbols aren’t open to our imagination. They are rooted in their usage in Scripture and informed by the Worldview of the original writers and readers. They have clear, knowable contexts that must be observed and followed for interpretation.
Imposing our context onto Revelation is interpretively flawed for another reason. Many of the symbols in Revelation have no coherent modern counterpart. What is the contemporary filter for the twenty-four elders and the living creatures that surround the enthroned lamb in Revelation 5? The golden censer of Revelation 8? The two witnesses of chapter 11? The great prostitute of chapter 17? All of these have secure Old Testament contexts.

I read a story where a Buddhist was asked, “What do Christians do that makes them stand out in a crowd?” The answer was short and straightforward, “They argue.” I know, it sounds unfair, but it’s an honest perspective from an outside observer. And, it’s worth a little discussion.
Every few minutes, the sound bites and headlines sow divisiveness and discord on every side. You soon realize that every segment is to continue the argument. It’s all about being right or being loud. I no longer watch any of the news services, nor do I invest much time on social media for the same reason.
We need to tell those skeptics of Christianity “I want to change your perception of Christians. Please, I want to show you something different. Will you let me?”
