Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script – Day 2540
Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2540 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before.
In today’s Wisdom Nugget, we will journey into God’s Word. In this episode, we’ll continue our exploration of Psalm 40, focusing on verses 9 through 12 from the New Living Translation.
In these verses, David shifts his focus from personal praise and thanksgiving to sharing God’s goodness with others and seeking God’s mercy in the face of overwhelming challenges. This passage is a beautiful blend of gratitude, proclamation, and dependence on God, offering profound lessons for our faith journey.
Let’s begin by reading the passage together:
Psalm 40:9-12 (NLT)
9 I have told all Your people about Your justice.
I have not been afraid to speak out,
as You, O Lord, well know.
10 I have not kept the good news of Your justice hidden in my heart;
I have talked about Your faithfulness and saving power.
I have told everyone in the great assembly
of Your unfailing love and faithfulness.
11 Lord, don’t hold back Your tender mercies from me.
Let Your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me.
12 For troubles surround me—
too many to count!
My sins pile up so high
I can’t see my way out.
They outnumber the hairs on my head.
I have lost all courage.
- Proclaiming God’s Justice and Faithfulness (Verses 9-10):
David begins this section with a bold declaration of his commitment to sharing God’s justice and faithfulness: “I have told all Your people about Your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as You, O Lord, well know.” David isn’t content to keep his experiences with God to himself—he feels compelled to tell others about God’s righteousness and saving power.
In verse 10, David continues, “I have not kept the good news of Your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about Your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of Your unfailing love and faithfulness.” These verses emphasize the importance of openly declaring God’s goodness. David doesn’t just whisper his gratitude in private—he proclaims it publicly, ensuring that others can be encouraged and inspired by what God has done.
This is a reminder for us as well. Our faith isn’t meant to be a private affair. When God works in our lives, it’s an opportunity to testify to His greatness, so others might see His hand at work and be drawn to Him.
Illustration:
Imagine someone who has been rescued from a life-threatening situation—perhaps pulled from a burning building or saved from drowning. Would they keep their gratitude to themselves, or would they share the story with others, highlighting the hero who saved them? David’s proclamation is like that. He recognizes that his deliverance isn’t just for his benefit; it’s an opportunity to point others toward God’s faithfulness and love.
For us, sharing our testimony doesn’t have to be dramatic. It can be as simple as telling a friend how God answered a prayer or provided peace in a difficult time. Like David, we can use our experiences to encourage others and give glory to God.
- A Plea for God’s Mercy (Verse 11):
After proclaiming God’s goodness, David shifts to a heartfelt plea in verse 11: “Lord, don’t hold back Your tender mercies from me. Let Your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me.” This verse shows David’s deep dependence on God. Even as he celebrates God’s faithfulness, he acknowledges his ongoing need for mercy and protection.
David’s request for “tender mercies” reflects his understanding of God’s compassionate nature. He knows that God’s love and faithfulness are not just past realities but present and ongoing sources of protection and provision. By asking for God’s love to “always protect” him, David demonstrates a trust in God’s ability to sustain him through any challenge.
Application:
This verse is a powerful reminder for us to continually rely on God’s mercy. No matter how long we’ve been walking with the Lord or how many victories we’ve experienced, we never outgrow our need for His love, grace, and protection. Like David, we can approach God with confidence, knowing that His tender mercies are always available to us.
- Overwhelmed by Troubles and Sin (Verse 12):
In verse 12, David opens his heart fully, sharing the weight of his struggles: “For troubles surround me—too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage.”
This verse captures the reality of being overwhelmed, not only by external troubles but also by internal guilt. David feels surrounded by challenges on every side, and his sins add to the weight he’s carrying. The imagery he uses is vivid: sins “pile up so high” they block his vision, and they “outnumber the hairs on my head.” These words paint a picture of someone who feels completely trapped and unable to find a way forward.
David’s honesty is refreshing. He doesn’t try to sugarcoat his situation or pretend to have it all together. Instead, he brings his fears, failures, and frustrations to God, trusting that God will meet him in his brokenness.
Illustration:
Have you ever felt overwhelmed by a to-do list that keeps growing faster than you can check items off? The more you look at it, the more paralyzed you feel, unsure of where to start. David’s description of his troubles and sins piling up is like that, but on a much deeper level. Yet, just as we can find relief by tackling one task at a time or asking for help, David knows that his ultimate relief comes from bringing everything to God.
For us, this verse is a reminder that it’s okay to admit when we’re struggling. We don’t have to carry the weight of our burdens alone. God invites us to cast our cares on Him because He cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).
- Themes and Lessons for Today:
Psalm 40:9-12 offers several important lessons for our faith journey. Let’s reflect on a few key themes:
- The Power of Testimony.
David’s willingness to proclaim God’s justice, faithfulness, and love reminds us that our experiences with God are meant to be shared. Our testimonies can inspire and encourage others to trust in Him. - Continual Dependence on God.
No matter how many times we’ve seen God’s faithfulness in the past, we still need His mercy and protection every day. David’s plea for God’s tender mercies is a model of humble dependence. - Honesty in Prayer.
David doesn’t shy away from sharing his struggles with God. His transparency shows us that we can approach God with every aspect of our lives, including our fears, failures, and frustrations. - God’s Compassionate Nature.
David’s trust in God’s tender mercies and unfailing love reminds us that God is both powerful and compassionate. He meets us in our need and offers grace that is sufficient for every challenge.
- Practical Applications:
How can we apply the truths of this passage to our daily lives? Here are a few suggestions:
- Share Your Story.
Take time to reflect on how God has worked in your life and look for opportunities to share those stories with others. Your testimony can be a source of hope and encouragement. - Seek God’s Mercy Daily.
Like David, make it a habit to ask for God’s tender mercies and protection. Acknowledge your need for His grace in every area of your life. - Be Honest in Prayer.
Don’t be afraid to bring your struggles and failures to God. He already knows your heart and wants you to come to Him with authenticity and trust. - Trust in God’s Compassion.
Remember that God’s love and faithfulness are constant. No matter how overwhelming your circumstances or sins may feel, His mercy is greater. - Conclusion:
As we reflect on Psalm 40:9-12, let’s follow David’s example of proclaiming God’s goodness, seeking His mercy, and trusting in His love. Whether we’re sharing a testimony, facing challenges, or wrestling with sin, we can confidently approach God, knowing He hears us, cares for us, and will sustain us.
Thank you for joining me today on Wisdom-Trek. As you go about your week, I encourage you to share God’s faithfulness with others, rely on His mercy, and find peace in His unfailing love. Until next time, may God’s wisdom guide your steps, and may His peace fill your heart.
