(Love) – Tools Needed for a Successful
Today we want to look at the tools needed to have a successful trek that will enable us to live abundantly (fully) and serve a purpose that is greater than ourselves. In other words, what tools are needed to create a living legacy that positively impacts everyone that is in our world?
What are the tools that we need to have in our backpack for a successful Wisdom-Trek? As a person of faith, I take many of my lessons and examples of wisdom from the Bible because it has been the foundation for wisdom in my life.
Today the tools or the attributes that we want to study are taken from the book of Galatians 5:22-23. Just as I am your guide to wisdom, these tools should be part of everyone’s trek for wisdom. These attributes are provided by God’s Spirit which guides my life.
These tools/attributes are referred to in Galatians as the “Fruit of the Spirit.”
If we see fruit on a tree, such as an apple, then we know what kind of tree it is because of its fruit. In the same way, others will be able to tell what type of person we are by the fruit or attributes that are manifested in our lives. This is an important concept to grasp as we look at the various tools/attributes that we will need in our lives in order to be wise and create a living legacy.
As we explore these tools, I would like you to visualize your life as a wheel, particularly a bike tire with a hub and spokes extending from the hub. Without the hub as the core or foundation, the remaining tools/spokes would not have anything to attach to, and the wheel would be broken and useless.
The first tool/attribute, which is the hub of the wheel, is love. Without love, then the other tools/attributes (spokes) are not nearly as effective. In order for the remaining tools to have an impact on our successful Wisdom-Trek, we must love ourselves and others unconditionally (as much as is humanly possible).
There is a song written by Hal David and composed by Burt Bacharach in 1965 (and sung by many since) called What the World Needs Now is Love. As in all ages of time, and especially today, these words hold true. This is so true that Christ taught that the entire Scriptures can be summed up in two commands; love God, and love others as yourself. This is why love is the foundation tool for the others.
The remaining tools or spokes of our wheel are joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. If we relate this to our hiking or trek analogy, think of love as our backpack which carries all of our other necessary components or tools. It would be nearly impossible to hike a rough terrain without a backpack. So, it is impossible to integrate the other tools in our lives without love.
If we assimilate these nine tools into our everyday activities so they are manifested as fruit, then it will allow us to live successful and abundant lives. This is how integrity is built, by integrating these nine tools into our everyday lives. When we do so successfully, our lives will impact our world, and we can begin to leave a living legacy. We should not wait until we are no longer on this trek of life to leave a legacy. Let every action each day positively impact others.

Love is the backpack. I like that!
